If you're thinking about getting permanent makeup, you're not alone. More and more women choose to get this type of cosmetic tattoo every year. There are many reasons for wanting permanent makeup, such as maintaining a youthful look or having a no-fuss morning routine.

While it can save time and money in the long run, you should know a few things before committing. Here's everything you need to know about permanent makeup.

What Is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup is exactly what it sounds like: it's a cosmetic tattoo that mimics traditional makeup. It’s a semi-permanent color that enhances the face using cosmetic ink that slowly fades over time. The most common types of permanent makeup are eyebrow tattoos, lip liners, and full lip color. Freckle tattoos are another emerging trend.

Eyebrow tattoos

are often called microblading. It’s the most popular permanent makeup treatment. It’s ideal for those who have soft or nonexistent eyebrows and needs to fill their eyebrows daily.

Lip liners or lip blushing

Gives you a blurred-lip look with subtle color. It’s one of the most intense forms of permanent makeup because the lips are sensitive, and you need a high pain tolerance if you want this procedure.

Eyeliners or lash line enhancements

Can be as subtle as a dark line that helps your eyes pop or as loud as cat eye or smoky wing styles. It’s ideal for those who want extra lash definition on their eyes.

Freckle tattoos

Are semi-permanent freckles that have been gaining popularity recently. They create a youthful vibe through soft, natural freckles across the face.

How Is It Done?

Permanent makeup is applied using a needle and ink similar to a traditional tattoo. However, the needles used for permanent makeup are much more refined, so the resulting tattoo is much more subtle. Since the colors applied are subtle, several touch-up sessions are scheduled weeks apart to get the final look.

How Long Does It Last?

While the results are technically permanent, they will fade over time. On average, eyebrow tattoos and eyeliners last between one and three years, while lip tattoos last about a year. When colors fade, you can always go back for retouch sessions.

How Much Does Permanent Makeup Cost?

Permanent eyebrows costs from $600 to $1,000 while lip blushing costs from $450 to $1,400. Eyeliners start at $600.

Is Permanent Makeup Safe?

When performed by a licensed professional, permanent makeup is considered safe. However, as with any tattooing, there is always a risk of infection or allergic reaction.
Lip liners carry the most risk because, when done incorrectly, they can result in pouty lips without an easy fix.

Another risk is when you don’t like the outcome. You’d need to wait for the colors to fade since laser removal may produce the opposite results. To minimize the risks, diligently research the artist performing the procedure. Know your skin type and consult with a dermatologist if permanent makeup will work for you.

Permanent makeup is not advisable in some cases, like oily skin and large pores.

Should You Get A Permanent Makeup?

Like anything else, there are pros and cons to getting permanent makeup. Some of the advantages include saving time and money on traditional makeup products, being able to swim and sweat without worrying about your makeup smudging or running, and never having to worry about your eyebrows or lips looking "off." On the downside, tattooing your eyebrows or lips comes with all of the same risks as any other type of tattooing, plus there's always the possibility that you may not like the results.

If you're considering getting permanent makeup, doing your research first is essential. Weigh the pros and cons and decide if it's right for you. And once you're ready to take the plunge, be sure to find a qualified professional who can help you achieve the look you desire.
